Bugling Merit Badge

Bugling Merit Badge

The Bugling Merit Badge has been consistently one the least-earned merit badges. It can be really difficult or pretty easy. It requires you to have decent skills at bugling so someone who has never touched a brass instrument could find this hard. On the other hand, if you already play a trumpet, this could be one of the easiest merit badges.
The Majority of the requirements are to learn about the instrument; its history, how to clean it, the use of each bugle call, etc. Requirement 2a requires you to compose your own bugle call, and a use for it. Probably the most difficult requirement is number 3 which requires you to learn to play 10 bugle calls. The last requirement is to serve as your troops bugler for 3 months.
When I did the Bugling Merit Badge, I already had experience playing it. In fact, I was already the bugler for my troop. Here is a video of me playing taps at Wreaths Across America last year:

Since doing the Bugling Merit Badge, I have often been the bugler for my troop and played at many scouting activities and service projects.
If you already play brass and you need elective merit badges, or if you are just up for a challenge, Bugling is a great merit badge for you.
